I. Key Descriptors of the Word:

     Eternal—notice the repetition of “in the beginning…” (vv. 1 & 2)

     Distinct—the Word was with God (v. 1)

The Word is God (v. 1)

     Creator—everything was created by Him (v. 3)

The Source of Life & Light (vv. 4, 5, 7-9)

Real life is found only in Him.

The darkness will never extinguish the light!

II. The world resists the Word (vv. 9-13)

The world described has become hostile toward God.

God’s presence and character are revealed through creation (Romans 1:20).

We’ve been hiding since Genesis 3.

His own did not receive him… (v. 11)

The world continues to deny Him and refuses to receive Him

III. The Promise Revealed: The Incarnation. (v. 14)

The incarnation is the coming of God in human form.

Jesus is 100% God and 100% human.

He made his dwelling among us (v. 14b)—think Tabernacle (Exodus 40)

The greatest gift to humanity came at Christmas: God Himself.

IV. Back to the Promise (v. 12-13)

     Everyone who recognizes Him…

Everyone who believes and receives Him…

Believe = accept & trust as true.
Receive = accept as a gift.

He gave the right to become children of God

Have you recognized, believed & received Jesus?

“Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail th’ incarnate Deity.
Pleased as man with men to dwell; Jesus, our Emmanuel!”
