A Sermon Based Home Fellowship is a small group (10-12) of people who meet each week at a defined time (Sunday through Friday). The primary goal is to enable people to develop relationships within Church of the Foothills. A secondary goal is to enrich biblical understanding.

 

How does it work? A trained and capable facilitator leads the discussion based on questions related to the passage of the previous Sunday sermon. There will be two 9 week sessions this winter and spring, a summer break and a re-start in the fall. The commitment is to attend the group and spend 60-90 minutes a week in home preparation by going over the questions of the week. An agreement is signed at the beginning of each session as a gentle means of accountability respectful of others in the group. At the end of each session, people can opt to join a different group if they wish, or opt out altogether. However, we hold it is important to stay in the chosen group for the entire session to give it a chance to work.

 

Each Sunday I meet with Joy Graf, Marv Stern and Lowell Goetze to develop a list of questions based on the text of the next sermon. There are three types of questions: history giving in which group members talk about themselves in non-threatening ways; questions that explore the impact of the sermon or that have come to people’s minds as a result of their interaction with the message; thirdly, a few “going deeper” questions that are designed to further explore the biblical text. These questions are posted each week prior to the Sunday on which the sermon is given; a few sheets of questions will be printed for those not connected to the web.

 

If someone is not able to hear the sermon in person, it is posted each week on the church’s web page. A simple click of the mouse will provide the audio recording. Others will be able to pick up a recording at the church office on Monday.

 

Sermon Based Home Fellowships are core to the development of Church of the Foothills. We have experienced unusual growth in recent months and realize that for people to get connected in relationships will require that we grow smaller at the same time.
